Conrad Johnson

Conrad Johnson was born in South London in 1941.
He studied at Beckenham School of Art and Ravensbourne College of Art and Design where he gained the National Diploma in Design. Later he trained at Goldsmiths College and then at Leicester University where he attained a Diploma in Education.

'AB6 Bourton'

He began teaching in 1963 in Kent and moved to Northamptonshire in 1966 to teach children in the 7 – 11 year age range. He was appointed Deputy Head teacher in Kettering in 1976 where he remained until he retired.

'AB11 Boating'

Now he paints, using most media: Oils, gouache, acrylic and computer.

'The Red Vase'

'Holy Trinity From Manor Park'

‘ Any scene, whether landscape, portrait, interior, whatever...... I see as a pattern of flat shapes, each with a variety of tone, colour and texture, that fit together like a jigsaw...... you just have to colour in the shapes you see in front of you..... I wish......’

'Back Yard'

His main influences have been painters like Ivon Hitchens, John Constable, Nicolas de Stael and Patrick Heron. He prefers works that have no narrative or explanation - just the visual image.
Usually inspired by an image glimpsed in nature, he makes a series of sketches before carefully composing a picture or he will compose from photographs of the ‘glimpses’ which he works at on a pc, cutting and pasting, cloning and resizing, experimenting with colour and tone, shape and texture until he is satisfied. This elaborately worked out composition provides the impetus to begin painting.

'Wiltshire Garden'

His subjects can range from portraits and figures, to landscapes and still life and the style from representational to abstract. However, it is usually landscape, particularly locally, that provides the initial stimulus to most of his subject matter.
